593UNESCO Chair “Cultural Heritage: From Past to Future” of Magtymguly Turkmen State University
On February 18, 2023, the UNESCO Chair “Cultural Heritage: From Past to Future” was opened at Magtymguly Turkmen State University. With the establishment of the UNESCO chair, Magtymguly Turkmen State University has been given ample opportunities to develop cooperation with the world’s leading science and education centers and foreign universities. In the UNESCO chair, it was determined to identify the relevant scientific directions for studying cultural heritage and to conduct scientific research on them, to use modern methods, to assign scientific topics for students, and to carry out relevant work on carrying out scientific topics together with the neighboring UNESCO chairs of the countries in the region.
The purpose of the chair is to study and promote the cultural heritage of the Turkmen people and the peoples of the world, and to circulate the collected scientific information and experiences in this regard. Based on this goal, it was planned to carry out the activities related to the UNESCO chair “Cultural Heritage: From Past to Future” at Magtymguly Turkmen State University:
- to study cultural heritage, material and spiritual values, to contribute to the preservation of historical and cultural heritage;
- conducting analyses of cultural heritage, directing young scientific researchers
- teachers and students to the analysis and study of cultural heritage as an object of scientific research;
- organizing scientific conferences, “round tables”, meetings, interviews on the issues of studying the cultural heritage of the Turkmen people and world peoples, introducing the results of scientific research into the educational process;
- promoting the development of international scientific cooperation between the university and UNESCO;
- to organize scientific and methodical cooperation with neighboring higher educational institutions of Turkmenistan and foreign countries.
On February 18, 2025, the UNESCO Chair celebrated its two-year anniversary. During this period, the chair organized and held several scientific and practical conferences, based on the results of two of them, collections of theses were published:
1. Cultural heritage as a source of patriotic education of youth. - Ylym, 2024 (in Turkmen, English and Russian languages).
2. The creativity of Magtymguly Fragi is a universal heritage. – Ylym, 2025 (in Turkmen, English and Russian languages).
Students of the chair defended their diploma works on the cultural heritage of the Turkmen people and the peoples of the world.
Teachers of the chair took part in several international scientific conferences and round tables with scientific reports on cultural heritage, and also published articles in foreign collections and scientific journals.

8. from the Directorate of protection, study and restoration of historical and cultural monuments of Turkmenistan.
